Vladimir Rakic

Registered Psychotherapist

Through this, with you.

I'm Vladimir Rakic, a licensed Registered Psychotherapist based in Mississauga and Etobicoke, ON - here to assist you through life's most complex and challenging matters. I genuinely care about my patients' well-being and embrace a client-centered approach to counselling. Having a client-centered approach means that I change my theoretical approach to fit your unique needs, background and personality. Not every method works for each person and every situation, and therefore I make sure that I do my best to work with my clients to find an approach that suits them best.

Since 2009, I have dedicated my life to developing a client-centered, well-rounded and non-judgmental approach to guide people through life's most challenging situations. I received undergraduate degrees in both Psychology and Religion & Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University. After this, I finished two master's degrees, one in Religion and Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University, and the other in Psychotherapy and Spiritual Care from Martin Luther University College. Through my studies, I have had the privilege of studying ways of healing the mind and soul both through secular psycho-therapeutic methodologies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Buddhist and Mindfulness-based psychology and Spiritually integrated and Existential Therapy - as well as learning how various spiritual and religious traditions, and their leaders, approach mental health issues, and life's big questions in general. Through my studies, I visited, interviewed and lived with Indigenous Tribes in North America and the Amazon, various Eastern Orthodox Christian and Buddhist monasteries, and spent time with Islamic Communities and their religious leaders. Only when my clients invite me I can integrate techniques and teachings from these traditions within the sessions to ensure that my clients receive a tailored treatment plan that first uniquely to their needs. My knowledge of different cultures and religions has also allowed me to work successfully with individuals a wide from different backgrounds and belief systems, both secular and religious.

I have used this knowledge and experience to guide individuals struggling with addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression, shame and other mental health concerns as a behavioural counsellor at a long-term care facility for people with histories of addictions for over four years. I have also worked with families that were refugees and provided mental health support to them and their children for four years. I volunteered with Special Olympics and coached a soccer team for two years, and am still working with individuals that have Autism and FASD in a residential setting. After this, I became a Registered Psychotherapist. My work expanded to working with Individuals (Adults & Children), Families, and Couples that struggled with a wide variety of mental health concerns. I finished my internship and continue to volunteer for KW Counselling Services. After finishing my internship, I worked as a Family and Children's Therapist in Mississauga. During my time in Mississauga, I decided to open up my own practice and Vladimir Rakic Psychotherapy was born.

We will work with you to determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on your unique needs and goals.

Q: What can I expect during a psychotherapy session?

A: Psychotherapy sessions typically involve one-on-one conversations between you and your therapist. Approaches We Use

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Unlocking the Power of Your Mind for Positive Change

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a popular psychological approach that has received acclaim for its effectiveness in addressing a wide range of mental health issues. It is grounded in the belief that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and that by altering our thought patterns and responses, we can achieve emotional well-being and personal growth.

Understanding CBT:

At its core, CBT is a therapeutic approach that seeks to identify and modify unhelpful or negative thought patterns, beliefs, and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress or psychological issues. It is a collaborative process between the therapist and the individual seeking help. The primary goal of CBT is to empower individuals to recognize and challenge their cognitive distortions, subsequently replacing them with healthier, more constructive thought patterns and behaviors.

Benefits of CBT:

  1. Proven Effectiveness: One of the foremost benefits of CBT is its extensive empirical support. Numerous clinical trials and studies have demonstrated its efficacy in treating a wide array of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more. This evidence-based approach provides assurance that CBT is a sound choice for individuals seeking relief and improvement in their mental health.

  2. Practical Skills: CBT equips individuals with practical coping skills and strategies they can implement daily. These skills range from identifying negative thought patterns to developing effective problem-solving techniques, making it a valuable resource for managing and mitigating symptoms.

  3. Focused and Time-Limited: CBT is often a short-term treatment option, unlike other forms of therapy that may extend for years. Many individuals experience substantial progress within 12 to 20 sessions, making it an efficient choice for those with time constraints or a desire for more immediate results.

  4. Collaborative Approach: CBT strongly emphasizes collaboration between the therapist and the client. This active partnership ensures that the therapy is tailored to the individual's unique needs and goals, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment in the therapeutic process.

  5. Versatile Application: CBT is a versatile approach that can be adapted for individuals of all ages, from children to adults. It can be administered in various settings, including individual therapy, group therapy, and even through self-help resources, such as workbooks and online programs.

  6. Holistic Well-Being: Beyond symptom reduction, CBT takes a holistic approach by addressing the presenting issues and the underlying thought patterns and cognitive distortions that contribute to emotional distress. This approach facilitates lasting changes in thinking and behavior, improving overall well-being.

  7. Preventive Potential: CBT is about resolving existing problems and equipping individuals with the tools to prevent the recurrence of mental health issues. By learning to manage stress, identify triggers, and develop healthier coping mechanisms, individuals can fortify their mental resilience.

Purpose of CBT:

The overarching purpose of CBT is to promote psychological well-being and empower individuals to take control of their mental health. This multifaceted approach serves several specific purposes:

  • Symptom Alleviation: CBT aims to alleviate the distressing symptoms associated with various mental health conditions, enabling individuals to regain a sense of balance and normalcy in their lives.

  • Skill Development: Through CBT, individuals acquire a repertoire of practical skills, including cognitive restructuring, emotion regulation, and problem-solving, which can be used to effectively manage their emotional responses and behaviors.

  • Identification of Cognitive Distortions: CBT helps individuals identify and challenge cognitive distortions, such as all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophizing, and overgeneralization, which contribute to emotional distress.

  • Behavioral Change: CBT targets maladaptive behaviors and assists individuals in adopting healthier, adaptive behaviors, ultimately promoting positive changes in their lives.

  • Enhanced Coping Mechanisms: Individuals learn how to cope with stress, anxiety, and negative emotions in healthier ways, reducing the impact of these challenges on their overall well-being.

  • Improved Quality of Life: By fostering emotional regulation, symptom reduction, and healthier thought patterns, CBT enables individuals to lead more fulfilling and satisfying lives.

In summary, CBT is a versatile and evidence-based approach that empowers individuals to take charge of their mental health and well-being. Its practicality, focus on skill development, and collaborative nature make it a valuable tool for addressing a wide range of mental health issues. By targeting negative thought patterns and behaviors, CBT alleviates symptoms and equips individuals with the tools they need to lead happier, healthier lives. Whether you're seeking relief from anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges, CBT offers a pathway to positive change and personal growth.

The primary purpose of IFS is to promote healing, self-discovery, and personal growth by exploring and reconciling the different parts of the self. Key objectives include:

  • Part Harmony: IFS aims to establish a sense of harmony and cooperation among inner parts, allowing individuals to access their core or "Self." The Self is characterized by qualities such as wisdom, compassion, and calm.

  • Emotional Healing: IFS provides a structured approach to healing emotional wounds and resolving inner conflicts that may be contributing to mental health challenges.

  • Self-Compassion: It encourages individuals to treat themselves with kindness and understanding, fostering a positive self-relationship.

  • Self-Integration: IFS seeks to integrate the various parts into a cohesive and authentic self, allowing individuals to live more in alignment with their values and desires.

  • Personal Growth: Beyond healing, IFS supports personal growth by helping individuals access their innate strengths and wisdom.

In summary, Internal Family Systems is a therapeutic approach that aims to bring inner harmony and healing by exploring and reconciling the various parts of the self. Its benefits include emotional healing, self-awareness, improved relationships, and enhanced emotion regulation. The primary purpose of IFS is to promote inner harmony, emotional healing, self-compassion, self-integration, and personal growth. Somatic and Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Two Avenues to Holistic Healing

Somatic and Mindfulness-Based Therapy are two distinctive approaches to mental and emotional well-being, each with its own unique principles and techniques.

Somatic Therapy: Unearthing Emotions Through the Body

Somatic Therapy is grounded in the belief that our bodies store emotional experiences and that these experiences can manifest as physical sensations, tension, or movement patterns. It recognizes the intricate connection between the body and the mind. Some key elements of Somatic Therapy include:

  1. Body Awareness: Somatic Therapy places great importance on body awareness. Clients are encouraged to pay attention to their bodily sensations, such as muscle tension, pain, or discomfort, as these can be indicators of underlying emotional issues.

  2. Emotional Release: A primary aim of Somatic Therapy is to facilitate emotional release. By exploring and addressing physical sensations and their associated emotions, individuals can release pent-up feelings and achieve emotional healing.

  3. Trauma-Informed: Somatic therapy is often used in trauma-informed care. Trauma survivors, in particular, can benefit from this approach as it provides a safe and non-invasive method to process and heal from traumatic experiences.

  4. Mind-Body Connection: It emphasizes the importance of the mind-body connection. By understanding how emotions are stored and expressed in the body, individuals can gain insight into their emotional states and work towards healing and self-regulation.

Benefits of Somatic Therapy:

  • Emotional Healing: Somatic Therapy is particularly effective for individuals dealing with unresolved emotions or past traumas. It provides a tangible way to access and process these emotions, leading to emotional healing.

  • Physical Well-Being: Many individuals experience physical symptoms related to stress, anxiety, or emotional distress. Somatic therapy can alleviate these symptoms by addressing their emotional roots, promoting overall physical well-being.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Cultivating Present-Moment Awareness

Mindfulness-Based Therapy is rooted in the practice of mindfulness, which involves cultivating non-judgmental awareness of the present moment. This approach emphasizes the following:

  1. Present-Moment Attention: Mindfulness teaches individuals to focus their attention on the present moment. By observing thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations without judgment, individuals gain insight into their mental and emotional processes.

  2. Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness practices promote emotional regulation by teaching individuals to respond to their emotions with acceptance and self-compassion. This reduces reactivity and enhances emotional intelligence.

  3. Stress Reduction: Mindfulness techniques are powerful tools for stress reduction. They help individuals let go of worries about the future and regrets about the past, grounding them in the here and now.

  4. Self-Awareness: Mindfulness cultivates self-awareness by encouraging individuals to explore their inner world. This heightened awareness helps individuals gain a deeper understanding of their thought patterns and emotional triggers.

Benefits of Mindfulness-Based Therapy:

  • Stress Reduction: Mindfulness is widely recognized for its effectiveness in reducing stress and anxiety. By staying present and not dwelling on past regrets or future worries, individuals experience increased peace and calm.

  • Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness empowers individuals to regulate their emotions more effectively. When faced with challenging situations, they can respond with clarity and composure, fostering emotional intelligence.

  • Self-Awareness: Mindfulness promotes self-awareness by encouraging individuals to observe their thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgment. This deeper self-understanding can lead to personal growth and improved well-being.

Purpose of Somatic and Mindfulness-Based Therapy:

The purpose of Somatic Therapy is to promote emotional healing, physical well-being, and self-regulation by exploring the mind-body connection and addressing emotions stored in the body.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy aims to cultivate self-awareness, reduce stress, enhance emotional regulation, and foster resilience by promoting present-moment awareness and non-judgmental acceptance.

In summary, Somatic and Mindfulness-Based Therapy offer unique avenues to holistic healing. Somatic Therapy explores the mind-body connection and facilitates emotional release, while Mindfulness-Based Therapy cultivates present-moment awareness and emotional regulation. Whether used separately or in combination, these approaches empower individuals to achieve emotional healing, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being.
